Panagia Portarea

The single-nave wooden roof small temple Portarea Virgin Mary built in the 16o century on the Byzantine monidrio Portarea of Our Lady of the 13th century was a Catholic monastery and is one of the most important churches in Portaria, since in this is the name of the region.

The original chapel was built before 1273 as he informs us historical source, this year the then Bishop of Demetrias, Michael Panaretos, gave a ticket to the letter of Anna Melissenos or Malissiani, wife of the then Byzantine toparchies Demetrias, Nicholas Melissenos. The couple that later became monks, the hand with Nikolaos Nile monk name, not the name Anna Anthousa nun. The Church has dimensions of 10 meters long and nine meters wide while the main entrance adorns the image of the Virgin, as happened at the monastery and the wooden temple was built in the early 18th century, at the expense of K. Christou Moraitis.

Maintenance work carried out in recent years at the monument showed that the original Byzantine church are preserved in the low parts of the northern, southern and eastern parts of side wall and that he had the same dimensions as those of the temple of the 16th century. This small monastery was as informed by sources from the oldest monastery New Stone Baptist, to which it belonged, after its establishment in 1972, and the year of construction is placed with very high probability in the first half of the 13th century. Looking at the monastery from the outside certainly are transported to another era while nostalgia is pervasive in space.
